Screens Have Taken Over Classrooms.
And It Shows.
Around 2012, tech companies began aggressively marketing Chromebooks, iPads and EdTech platforms to schools. They made grand promises of revolutionizing education and preparing our students for a digital future. More than a decade has passed. Billions have been invested. The results? Test scores across the nation are at historic lows. The achievement gap is widening. Students are graduating less digitally-literate than previous generations. Then we also need to consider privacy concerns, harms to health & wellness, the risk of access to inappropriate content, the displacement of critical skills, and more. Meanwhile, tech companies continue to profit off our students. It's time to stop ignoring the mounting evidence that the overuse of screens have negatively impacted learning and student outcomes and start collaborating on solutions to protect and prioritize the safety, well-being and learning of our children. It's time to re-evaluate the role digital technology plays in our kids' education.
ABOUT US
CHCCS Parents for Intentional Tech is dedicated to fostering collaboration among parents, educators, and Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools to address how 1:1 school-issued devices, educational technology, smartphones and emerging technologies are used in our schools.
Our group is designed for parents and educators to share their experiences with technology in our schools, share resources and research, and to organize collective action within our district.
We are not anti-tech. We are pro-learning. And we're asking for evidence-based, purpose-driven, and age-appropriate use of technology in our schools.
